KENYA - TANZANIA

Our first day takes us from Nairobi, Kenya's capital and the gateway to East Africa, through Maasai lands into Tanzania. Hiring customised safari land cruisers we head out for guided game drives across the endless plains of the Serengeti National Park and into the ancient Ngorongoro Crater.

The Serengeti is particularly famous as part of the stage of the annual migration of herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle closely followed by the ever present watchful eye of predators such as lion, cheetah and leopard. The world's largest extinct volcano, Ngorongoro Crater, is 18 kilometres across and 2,000 feet deep and dates back 2.5 million years. Elephant, rhino, antelope, lion and hyena roam the Crater floor, hippo wallow in the pools and flamingo turn the lakes pink. Our two night safari allows us the opportunity of seeing a broad cross section of Africa's incomparable wildlife.

Traditional Maasai bomas (villages) can also be seen across the region, the Maasai still shunning much of Western culture and in many ways continuing to live traditionally as semi nomadic pastoralists tending their herds of cattle. During our safari we visit a traditional boma and also stop off at Mto Wa Mbu, 'Mossie Creek,' to try our hand at bartering for carvings, spears, jewellery and other curios.

Journeying south, we often catch a glimpse of snow capped Kilimanjaro, as we travel to Dar Es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast. Here we leave the truck for four days to take the ferry to the exotic Spice Island of Zanzibar. An island of alluring images, of vibrant bazaars in bustling Stone Town, of endless palm fringed white beaches on which to relax, warm, tropical, azure waters and gorgeous sunsets. Sip a fruit cocktail on the verandah of Africa House as the traditional dhows, the majestic sailing ship of the region, sail across the harbour. Enjoy fresh seafood and local dishes cooked in island grown spices in small family restaurants. Visit Jozani Forest to see the indigenous red colobus monkeys and take a spice tour to sample the smells and tastes, as well as to find out a little of the rich history of the island. Zanzibar has some of the best diving in Africa, including the possibility of night dives, you can view whales, rays, hammerhead sharks as well as the many colourful tropical fish found on the coral reefs. Alternatively experience the magic of swimming and snorkelling with the dolphins.

Back on the mainland, we resume our journey travelling through Mikumi National Park, home to the dwarf elephant and onto Malawi.

MALAWI

Here in Africa's 'warm heart' we visit small fishing villages, carving markets and beach campsites as we travel down the Lake. Malawi is a country of lush vegetation, varied and beautiful scenery and friendly relaxed villages. Tours of a village and school are arranged as well as a local meal when we also enjoy some traditional dancing. The fun of a football match with the locals is usually a big event as is our beach barbecue. There are a lot of water activities including diving, water skiing, snorkelling and windsurfing available and horse riding is popular as well as souvenir shopping in the extensive markets.

On departures during the rains, when Luangwa is out of season we will explore further off the beaten track to visit extra highlights in this beautiful country such as Vwaza Marsh, Luwawa Forest or Nkhata or Senga Bay enabling us to get a true sense of rural Africa.

ZAMBIA

We now head out on the bumpy road to South Luangwa National Park (season pending) where we stay for two nights. Here we have a fairly unique opportunity for night game drives by spot lights, allowing us the opportunity to see some of Africa's elusive nocturnal creatures such as leopard, genet, porcupine and civit. South Luangwa is also famous for its huge concentration of elephant.

We now travel via Lusaka, Zambia to Lake Kariba where we can charter a houseboat for two nights, we relax on our cruise watch game by the shore edge and magical sunsets. The boats have a jacuzzi and motorised tender boats for game cruising by the waters edge. We can also hire rods to fish for tiger fish and bream. The boats are fitted with beds and the houseboat crew cook our meals over this period so the two night stay provides us with a relaxing break from truck life and camping.

ZAMBIA (ZIMBABWE)

We arrive in Livingstone, our final destination to stay a final few days by the mighty Victoria Falls. The Falls are known as Mosi-Oa Tunya, 'The Smoke that thunders'. The falls provide breathtaking views of sheer drops and raging waters. Mists from the falls rise metres into the air and have given rise to a lush tropical rainforest along the falls edge. Here we can white water raft in the gorge, sky dive, bungee jump, gorge swing, abseil or take a flight over the Falls known as 'The flight of the Angels'. Take time to wander the forest exploring different views of the Falls. Horse riding, elephant riding, lion walks and interactive drumming are also all on offer.

Livingstone offers it all - from adrenalin pumping activities, festive bars and restaurants, extensive markets, and sunset cruises gliding on strangely placid waters to enjoy the still beauty of the Zambezi River as the sun sets. An extraordinarily beautiful setting of one of nature's greatest wonders to finish your safari.

Further itinerary notes: Please note we can finish this safari on either the Livingstone side of the Zambezi at Victoria Falls or the Zimbabwean side.

We would advise that flights can be arranged either from Livingstone, on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls for the end of this safari where there is an international airport in Livingstone. Alternatively flights can be organised out of the Victoria Falls, Zimbabwean side.

Transfers can be arranged to either airport from the campsite where we finish.

The famous wildebeest migration is usually in the Serengeti any time from late November through to May. Outside these months if you wished to see the migration we offer bolt on safaris into the Masai Mara in Kenya over the months the herds might be found here. The Bolt On Safaris leave 4 days prior to our African Adventurer safaris giving you a chance to see the big herds of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson's gazelle on migration.
